Primate of Greek Orthodox Church: Europe recedes from Christian spirit

On July 8th, within the Pan-Thracian Holiest Synaxis, Archbishop of Athens and all Hellas Jerome II emphasized the fact that modern Europe is receding from Christian spirit and does not show due regard for the Greek nation. It is reported by Romfea.

“Europe of solidarity, cooperation, and Christian spirit has morphed into the Europe of exploitation and money-lenders’ trade. Such Europe is departing from Christian spirit, while its nations will have no future, Namely for this reason a “euroscepticism”  phenomenon has come into its own,” the Archbishop said.

“European leaders must have respect for the culture, traditions, customs, and attitudes of each nation. I have no illusions. Foreigners will not leave Greece until the history of our country grows bleak, the people lose their religiousness, and we are torn away from our roots and traditions to enter what is called a new history cycle,” he underscored.

“I feel ashamed when I watch our schools throwing into waste-bins the pictures of our heroes who used to be our historic pride,” outraged the Primate.

Archbishop Jerome also underlined that in the relationships between the Church and the state “it is important to have positive atmosphere of mutual understanding and development of our positions, rather than shouts and strives for escalation. There should be pure relationships between the Church and the state for the welfare of our native land,” he concluded.
