Hungary wants to build Greek Catholic centre in Transcarpathia

Istvan Grego, the Commissioner of the Hungarian Government, met with Milan Shashik, bishop of the Mukachevo Greek-Catholic Diocese, to discuss the construction of the Greek Catholic religious centre in the town of Beregovo, reports the Carpathian Objective with reference to the website of the Hungarian government.

Istvan Grego stressed that the Hungarian government, like the Reformed and Roman Catholic Churches, sees a strategic partner in the Transcarpathian Greek Catholic Church, and therefore allocates 600 million forints for the construction of the Hungarian religious centre.

Also, Istvan Grego held talks with the mayor of Mukachevo, Andrei Baloga, on the issues of the Hungarian-speaking population of the region.

The Greek Catholic Diocese of Mukachevo is a self-governing (sui iuris) church of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Churches. It was formed on September 19, 1771 by the Pope of Rome Clement XIV. The Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church is the collective name for a group of self-governing Eastern Catholic churches, historically uniting Greek Catholics from among the Ruthenians and adhering to the Byzantine rite.

In the world, there are three independent Ruthenian-Catholic jurisdictions. The diocese of Mukachevo in Ukraine is directly subordinate to Rome and is not part of the UGCC.
