Ministry of Culture finds Egyptian mummies in Kiev-Pechersk Lavra
As reported, earlier in the year, during the verification of the funds of the National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve, deputy general director, archaeologist Sergei Pivovarov discovered an ancient Egyptian mummy.
"Later it became known that this includes even several most interesting exhibits which got to Kiev at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As it turned out, at first they were kept in the Church-Archaeological Museum, later – in the Museum of Atheism, which was then located in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
For several decades these unique items have been forgotten in the museum storage facility and only recently have been found. Now the collection of antiquities of Ancient Egypt consists of two mummies, two painted sarcophagi and several canopies (Greek Κάνωβος, Latin Canopus – funerary vessels for internal organs)," says the announcement of the presentation.
The event will be attended by the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Yevgeny Nishchuk, Director General of the National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve Lyubomir Mihailina, staff of the reserve and scientists.
