The attempt to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is part of a large-scale process of de-Christianisation of Ukraine, said Metropolitan Clement, the head of the UOC Information and Education Department, in a commentary to the BBC on the adoption in the first reading of the anti-church bill No. 8371 by the Verkhovna Rada.
"I would not consider this event solely as a localised fight against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church by its antipodes," the bishop said. “This is a global process of de-Christianisation of Ukrainian society. I assure you that you will see how those who demand the banning of the UOC allegedly in the interests of state security, those who persistently lobby the OCU in power, tomorrow will unanimously vote for the introduction of same-sex marriage in Ukraine, and the day after tomorrow I do not even have enough imagination where the boundaries of their lawmaking will move".
As reported, earlier Archbishop Mykola of Kirovohrad and Novomyrhorod said that the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is not because it is allegedly "non-Ukrainian", but because it is the Church of Christ.
