On February 27, 2024, the Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin commented on French President Emmanuel Macron's statement about the possible deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine for war with Russia, saying that such proposals are frightening and terrible. He made these remarks during an award ceremony for the "Economy and Society" competition, reports the Vatican News.
According to him, sending troops to Ukraine "will only lead to escalation, which the Vatican has been trying to avoid from the very beginning".
At the same time, the cardinal noted that President Macron's proposal may have been prompted by the fact that the war has been ongoing for two years without any diplomatic or military prospects.
"I wouldn't say it's apocalyptic (Macron's statement), because that might be too strong a word for today, but it's undoubtedly terrible... It would be ideal if both sides found a way to dialogue. I believe that, through dialogue, a solution can be found," said the representative of the Roman Catholic Church.
As reported, the Office of the President of Ukraine called the Pope pro-Russian and ruled out the possibility of his participation in the negotiation process with Russia.
