Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus, responded to questions from a journalist regarding the law on same-sex marriage adopted in Greece.
When asked by the journalist whether the Church would accept MPs (who voted for the same-sex marriage law), the Metropolitan replied:
"No, no, no! We will not accept them. Those who do this depart from the Christian faith. It is a betrayal of Christ, and for these unfortunate souls, it would have been better if they had not been born. They will perish if they do not repent."
After this, the journalist asked Metropolitan Seraphim, "Will you also not baptize the children of homosexuals?"
The bishop replied: "Of course not! I said this! For three reasons.
Firstly, children do not have faith; it is compensated by guardians. These people do not have faith because they live in such a way, so what faith can they pass on to their children?
Secondly, the clergyman would have to participate by putting his signature on the documents certifying the event. Wouldn't this be a kind of recognition?
Thirdly, if we love children, we will not baptize them. Why? To allow them to understand that the actions of their caregivers are sinful and wrong."
As reported, the Metropolitan of Piraeus excommunicated politicians who supported same-sex marriage.
Meanwhile, the Phanar criticized the Greek Church for not accepting the law on same-sex marriage.
