On March 25, 2024, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution by 14 votes calling for an immediate "humanitarian" ceasefire in Gaza until the end of the month of Ramadan. This was reported by news.israelinfo.co.il.
The resolution "demands an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to meet medical and other humanitarian needs."
The draft resolution was introduced today in the UN Security Council by ten non-permanent members of the Security Council. This is the first resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza that the UN Security Council has managed to adopt.
It is reported that the representative of the United States did not exercise the right to veto and abstained from voting.
The text also includes a demand for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, but the ceasefire requirement is not linked to negotiations between Israel and Hamas – unlike the resolution previously introduced by the United States and blocked by Russia and China.
The month of Ramadan began on March 11 and will last until April 9. On April 10, Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Fitr – the holiday marking the end of fasting.
As reported by the UOJ, on the first night of Ramadan, many Palestinians were not allowed into a mosque in Jerusalem.
