The Georgian Orthodox Church has explained the reasons for chanting in Church Slavonic in the Mtskheta Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli, reports rustavi2.ge.
“Today, together with the Georgian clergy, a joint service was held in the Georgian and Church Slavonic languages. As you know, services in Ukraine are conducted in the Church Slavonic language. In general, it is a common practice in the Church to allow guests to perform part of the service in their native language,” the Georgian Patriarchate said in a statement.
After the video of the joint service of Georgian and Ukrainian priests from the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral spread on the Internet, representatives of the radical liberal opposition of Georgia and the media controlled by them demanded justice for the Patriarchate of Georgia for praying "in Russian".
Tamara Chergoleishvili, editor of the Georgian magazine “Tabula”, said that on this fact, the law enforcement agencies are obliged to arrest and interrogate Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia.
As previously reported, the Georgian Church stated that the organizers of the LGBT march were responsible for the riots.
