Moldovan politician and leader of the opposition Victory bloc, Ilan Shor, stated that the country's government was ready to ban the Orthodox Church of Moldova (OCM) right after Ukraine passed a law banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), writes raskolam.net.
However, due to the upcoming presidential elections and the public outcry over the possible ban of the OCM, President Maia Sandu has not taken this step.
"Only public backlash has prevented them from doing this (banning the OCM, – Ed.) right now. We are an Orthodox country, and this has outraged practically everyone. After the referendum, Sandu is ready to cynically execute the most radical scenario and destroy the Metropolis of Moldova. Ukraine has done it, and Maia is set to follow suit," said Shor.
As previously reported, earlier, Vasile Șoimaru, a deputy from the ruling Action and Solidarity party in Moldova, stated that the country would abandon the Metropolis of Moldova following the Ukrainian pattern.
