On September 28, with the blessing of Archbishop Calinic of Suceava and Rădăuți, and at the initiative of Romanian-speaking communities and clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a memorial service was held at the Romanian Putna Monastery for the fallen defenders of Ukraine. This was reported by the Chernivtsi-Bukovyna Diocese on Facebook.

During the service, prayers were offered for 130 soldiers connected to Romanian culture, as well as for all soldiers who gave their lives defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine against Russian aggression.

The service was led by Archimandrite Melchisedek (Melnyk), the abbot of the monastery. He was joined by priests of the Suceava-Rădăuți Diocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church and clergy of the Chernivtsi-Bukovyna Diocese of the UOC. The service was attended by relatives of the fallen soldiers, Romanian diplomatic representatives from Chernivtsi, and Bukovynian intelligentsia.

“Archimandrite Melchisedek noted in his address that history moves in a spiral, and the current generation is suffering just as people did during the First and Second World Wars. The elder of the holy monastery also expressed gratitude for the prayers of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kyiv and All Ukraine, and Metropolitan Meletiy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna, and conveyed them his greetings,” the message said.

A memorial alley for the fallen soldiers was established on the monastery grounds.

As the UOJ previously reported, the Romanian Patriarch condemned the seizure of a UOC church in Chernivtsi by supporters of the OCU.
