At Halloween, a young man and several girls took semi-nude photos in Brody, Lviv region, using Jewish tombstones as props and decorations for the photo session. The United Jewish Community of Ukraine expressed outrage over such disrespect for the graves and the memory of the deceased. "Such behavior is unacceptable," reads the community’s statement on their Facebook page.
It is noted that the Jewish cemetery in Brody is one of the largest in Ukraine, with over 8,000 graves. One of these graves is that of the Hasidic tzaddik Chaim David ben Yosef and his wife Adele, who died in 1931. The cemetery also contains the graves of victims of the Nazi regime, who perished as a result of brutal violence.
"Dear parents, teach your children and instill the right values. A cemetery is a place of eternal rest, and any immoral actions in such places are unacceptable. Jews, like Ukrainians, deserve respect for the burial sites of their ancestors," the statement reads. "No like on the internet is worth the desecration of graves. As a community we hope that the local authorities and law enforcement will properly assess such 'creativity'."
As reported, the Israeli Ministry of Defense asked to remove the cross from the grave of a fallen soldier.
