Bsp. Seraphim Leads Patronal Feast at Protection Cathedral with Blessing of Abp. Gabriel

CHICAGO — With the blessing of Abp. Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, Locum Tenens of ROCOR's Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America, the Patronal Feast of the Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral was celebrated with solemnity and joy on Oct. 14, 2025 (N.S.). Bsp. Seraphim of Kostajnica, Vicar of the Diocese of Gracanica and Midwestern America (Serbian Orthodox Church), presided over the Divine Services.

The vigil on the eve of the feast was peaceful and prayerful, with the hierarchal choir — under the direction of Reader Michael Gill — providing beautiful liturgical singing. Clergy from across the northern diocese gathered, and many of the faithful received the Sacrament of Confession in preparation for Holy Communion.

On the feast day, clear autumn skies framed the celebration. Bsp. Seraphim was met by a host of clergy led by Archimandrite John (Magramm), the longest-serving priest in the diocese. During the Hours, Benjamin Weigold of St. Olga Mission (Sioux Falls, SD) was tonsured a Reader, and Reader John Peskey was ordained first a Subdeacon and then a Deacon for service at St. Olga Mission. Dcn. John is currently a student in the diocesan Pastoral School.

The Divine Liturgy saw many of the faithful receive Holy Communion from three chalices. Among those present was Archpriest Andre Papkov, retired Cathedral Dean, who prayed in the altar. A cross procession followed the service, held under perfect fall skies.

At the conclusion, Archpriest Gregory Joyce, diocesan secretary, presented Bsp. Seraphim with a hierarchal cross and panagia set that once belonged to the ever-memorable Abp. Peter. Fr. Gregory recalled that Abp. Peter had been in Belgrade during the 2024 consecration of Bsp. Seraphim — a trip after which he reposed in the Lord. The gift, presented on behalf of Abp. Gabriel, symbolized both memory and unity.

Bishop Seraphim expressed his heartfelt gratitude and affirmed the deepening fraternal ties between the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches.

The day concluded with a festive meal hosted by the cathedral sisterhood, following the traditional veneration of the Cross and thanksgiving prayers.
