Alexandrian Bishop Condemns Pat. Bartholomew’s ‘Common Sacred Worldview’
Met. Panteleimon of Antinoes also condemned Constantinople and Alexandria's recognition of the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
ISTANBUL — Met. Panteleimon of Antinoes, a retired hierarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, has sharply criticized Pat. Bartholomew of Constantinople for promoting ecumenism in a July 29 keynote address at the World Council of Religions for Peace in Istanbul.
Panteleimon condemned Bartholomew’s “Common Sacred Worldview", which describes the Sacred as expressed through God, Allah, Brahman, or the Luminous Void, as “heretical and delusional.”
Bartholomew argued for interreligious cooperation based on shared values like love and compassion to counter “materialistic reductionism,” while stressing no syncretistic religion was intended.
Panteleimon rejected this, asserting only the Holy Trinity is God, citing Scripture that labels other gods as “demons.” He called for prayers to guide those swayed by ecumenism.
The Metropolitan also criticized Constantinople’s (and Alexandria's) recognition of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine.”
