Pro-life leaders warn of further abortion expansion under incoming administration.

TRENTON, N.J. — Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli on Tuesday to become New Jersey’s next governor, securing 53% of the vote to Ciattarelli’s 46%, according to projections. Her victory extends Democratic control of the state’s governorship for a third consecutive term, the first such streak since 1961.

A former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor, Sherrill will succeed outgoing Gov. Phil Murphy in January. As reported by Life News, Sherrill is a strong supporter of abortion without restriction, and her election drew concern from pro-life advocates who warned of further erosion of protections for unborn children.

The win comes as New Jersey prepares for the opening of a Hudson County abortion clinic next summer that will offer abortions through all trimesters, one of few such facilities nationwide. Pro-life organizations, including New Jersey Right to Life, have condemned the project, calling it a “death factory” for viable infants and warning of the “cruel and painful” effects of late-term abortions.

In Congress, Sherrill voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in 2023, a measure requiring medical care for infants who survive abortion attempts — a stance that drew heavy criticism from pro-life groups.

As governor, Sherrill will oversee the state Department of Health, responsible for licensing abortion facilities, and could expand on Murphy-era policies that removed nearly all restrictions following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court ruling.

At 53, Sherrill will become New Jersey’s second female governor, following Christine Todd Whitman, who served from 1994 to 2001.

Previously, UOJ reported that the Trump administration is taking steps to overturn a Biden-era regulation that permitted taxpayer funds to cover travel expenses for unaccompanied illegal alien minors seeking abortions.
