St. Tikhon's Monastery Offers 'Eight Tones Crash Course'

The beginner-friendly workshop will be held September 19-21 at the Monastery in Waymart, Pennsylvania.

WAYMART, PA – St. Tikhon’s Monastery will host a three-day crash course on the Eight Tones, led by renowned musicologist and conductor Dr. Vlad Morosan, from September 19-21 (Friday to Sunday) at the Monastery Music Center, located at 175 St. Tikhons Rd, Waymart, PA 18472.

The beginner-friendly workshop is designed to teach participants the history, structure, and application of the tones, focusing on melodies, harmonies, choir pitching, and singing to unpointed text. Attendees will gain the skills to confidently sing any tone in their church choirs.

No prior choir experience or knowledge of the tones is required, though participants should be able to identify treble clef note names. Those unfamiliar with notation can prepare using resources like Tonesavvy.com. The workshop schedule includes:

  • Friday: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. – Session One
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Session Two; 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. – Lunch (provided); 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Session Three; 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. – Vigil at Monastery Temple
  • Sunday: 9:10 a.m. – Hours & Divine Liturgy at Monastery Temple; 11:10 a.m. – Bagels & Coffee at Music Center; 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. – Bookstore Presentation and Q&A with Dr. Morosan

Registration closes September 10, with a discounted rate available for students (high school, college, seminary, etc.). Lodging and meals, except for Saturday’s lunch, are not included. Participants are welcome to attend Divine Services at the monastery during the weekend. For travel details, visit the monastery’s website, and for inquiries, contact music coordinator Amy at [email protected].
